How To Care For Your Cosmetics?
Does this sound familiar? You take out an eye shadow from your drawer and realize that you can't remember when you've bought it or how long you've had it. The same goes for your lipstick. In fact, it seems that more than half of your cosmetics collection has been sitting in your drawer for an undetermined period of time. What do you do about it?

Although some of us have little ways of making cosmetics usable after they've been sitting around for a while, it is good practice to do spring cleaning every so often to ensure that you're getting maximum benefits from your cosmetics and avoiding infections.

Here are some steps to extend the shelf life of your cosmetics after you've opened them:

  • Use common sense.
  • Basic hygiene is important. Before applying makeup, make sure your hands and face are clean.
  • Instead of placing your hands into the product, pour the product onto your palm or use an applicator to scoop the product out.
  • Don't share your cosmetic with others.
  • Keep containers closed tightly when not in use.
  • Don't use water or saliva and mix with your cosmetic. This would introduce bacteria into your product.
  • Keep cosmetics in a dry, cool area and avoid placing them directly under sunlight.

BRUSHES & TOOLS

  • Oils and bacteria will get trapped inside bristles of the cosmetic brush. You should wash natural-bristled brushes once a month and synthetic brushes 3 - 4 times a month. Lay brushes flat to dry so that bristles don't break and to maintain the shape of the brushes. You can use mild soap to wash the brushes or even baby shampoo.
  • Makeup sponges are disposable tools. Wash after every use and dispose within 1 month, or when the sponge begins to tear.
